New portals for private and business customers

envia TEL is part of the enviaM group and is the leading telecommunications provider in Central Germany. Since 2000, the company has been providing its business customers with various telecommunications and data services. We have been supporting envia TEL for many years in the development and optimization of their business customer, distribution partner, and reseller portals. Starting this year, envia TEL is also targeting private customers. The development of the private customer portal prompted us to fundamentally modernize the portal architecture.

The goal

In the past, envia TEL exclusively offered its telecommunications services to business customers. In order to market these products and services, we have built a portal landscape in recent years with business customer, sales partner, and reseller portals.  was based on a rather monolithic architecture and ultimately Only one portal, in which the customer groups roles and permissions were distinguished from each other. With the strategic decision to also market fiber optic products to private customers in the future, it became apparent that this architectural approach would lead to significantly increasing complexity, which could also include limitations in terms of expandability and scalability in the future. For this reason, we have decided together with the customer to modernize the entire portal architecture and to dissolve the monolithic.  Decision of the approach.

At the end of the project, there should be a completely revised architecture on which we will then set up separate portals for the different customer groups. At the same time, the individual portals should be completely renewed and modernized.

Making architecture future-proof

In a first step, the various specific needs of customer groups were identified together with envia TEL. This resulted in an overview of which functions are needed across portals and which are only relevant to specific target groups. Building on these insights, a portal vision was then developed and the path to its implementation was defined in a staged model. The first milestone of the project was the private customer portal, which we developed from scratch using the Ruby on Rails web framework and modern, JavaScript-based technologies. By outsourcing parts of the application to microservices, we significantly improved the scalability of the portal. This was necessary because the expansion of the portfolio to include private customers was expected to lead to a significant increase in the number of customers and interactions. Through the portal, information can now be accessed in self-service, contracts and invoices can be viewed, and master data can be stored. The user interface follows both the corporate design and the latest design standards, enabling intuitive operation. Building on the experience from the private customer portal, we then developed the counterpart for business customers in the next step. With the central mailbox for business communication and the ability to map team structures through the roles and rights system, the special requirements of B2B customers as the most important customer group of envia TEL were taken into account. Through the innovative use of caching and pre-loading using the Hotwire technology and its Turbo component, which are specifically tailored to Ruby on Rails, we were able to enable smooth page interactions throughout the portal architecture despite asynchronous loading, providing the impression of a single-page application and thus offering high user-friendliness.

Individuality and flexibility

With the two new customer portals, envia TEL can score points in terms of usability and target group impact. In addition, the new portal architecture reduces complexity, technical dependencies, and sources of errors. Both portals can now be scaled and maintained independently. Furthermore, different user needs can now be served and treated in a customized and differentiated manner. Customers will find a visually modern and intuitively operable user interface that effectively strengthens their identification with envia TEL as their telecommunications provider in a sustainable way.
