Lidl is a successful expanding food retail company. Lidl is now represented in approximately 10,000 stores in over 20 countries in Europe. For this purpose, Lidl provides its national companies with systems that are optimized for internal needs.
The project
For many years, Lidl has been providing its national companies with an OpenText-based infrastructure for operating local country websites (e.g. lidl.at or lidl.ro). Lidl customers can find information there about the bi-weekly promotions, permanently discounted items, and the product range.
Due to Lidl's expansion into more European countries and the increasing number of users, it was evident that the existing infrastructure would not meet the requirements in the foreseeable future.
webit! was commissioned to develop a concept for a powerful infrastructure to operate the websites of all national companies and later also won the contract for the implementation of the project in close collaboration with colleagues from the Intentive agency. A particular challenge of the project was the development of a fast and intuitively operable maintenance interface for the editors.

The result
Efficient and dynamic service
The result of the project is a modern, scalable, multi-tenant, and multilingual web infrastructure, where product and campaign data are no longer stored in the Content Management System, but in a web application called 'Catalog' developed by webit!. This article data is dynamically queried via a webservice and integrated into the OpenText-based websites as well as existing smartphone applications. The result is impressive. The new web infrastructure is much more performant and stable both in the editorial environment and in content delivery. With this solution, Lidl is well prepared for the continuing increase in requirements for the overall system in the medium term. The next project phase for further expanding the functionalities for the country websites has already begun - in parallel with the rollout in over 20 national companies. Lidl is once again relying on the successful collaboration of the two agencies Intentive and webit! from the first project phase.
