Rethinking Accessible Mobility for Hanover
ÜSTRA Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG is the backbone of public transport in the Hanover region. Together with its partners, it ensures that hundreds of thousands of people reach their destinations safely, reliably, and in an environmentally friendly way every day.
With the planned merger of ÜSTRA, GVH, and regiobus into a unified public transport brand for the Hanover region, the company faced a special challenge: to create a shared digital platform that would provide passengers with the best possible and most intuitive information on all aspects of public transport in the region.
Three brands, one goal: Public transport in Hanover is growing together
The three transport companies ÜSTRA, Großraum-Verkehr Hannover (GVH), and regiobus Hannover have recently started operating under a unified public transport brand, bringing local mobility in the Hanover region together under one roof.
As a first step, we developed an interim website for ÜSTRA based on existing content. With targeted updates to design, structure, and navigation, it bridged the gap until the full relaunch while already improving key service features and making the first elements of the new brand identity visible.
In parallel, we began designing the full relaunch of uestra.de. The goal: to consolidate previously separate content from three different websites into one centralized platform for public transport in the Hanover region — user-friendly, modern, intuitive, accessible, and clearly recognizable as part of ÜSTRA’s digital presence.

Our Implementation
From idea to user-friendly platform
The new bilingual website is based on TYPO3 version 13 LTS and was designed and implemented with accessibility in mind from the very beginning. A contrast mode automatically adjusts colors and backgrounds to ensure that content remains easily readable even for users with visual impairments. Clear structures, generous spacing, and visible focus states further enhance usability. The website’s navigation was also significantly simplified, and a new, streamlined online service section was introduced. As part of the project, several external applications — such as timetable search, digital timetable books, and ticket databases — were seamlessly integrated into the website. Our previous experience from projects with GVH helped streamline technical interfaces and intelligently connect existing systems.
Design
A design for clarity and orientation
We translated the corporate design developed by Jung von Matt consistently into digital form and implemented it for the website. The goal was to present information in a structured way while making the ÜSTRA brand tangible across all devices. A clean grid, clear typography, and a well-considered color scheme provide structure and orientation. One key focus of the project was the user-friendly presentation of complex and extensive topics such as ticket options. All ÜSTRA tickets are now grouped by usage scenarios — for example, spontaneous trips, multi-day outings, or regular commutes. This needs-based presentation helps users find the right ticket more quickly. The mobile experience also delivers clear priorities: generous, easy-to-use modules, streamlined navigation, and focused entry points make central functions like trip planning, ticket purchasing, and service alerts quickly accessible.

Result
Easier to the destination
The new ÜSTRA website offers users a significantly improved experience. Content is clearly structured, quickly accessible, and easy to use across all devices. The streamlined, accessible design provides clear orientation and reflects ÜSTRA’s familiar brand identity in a modern, friendly look. At the same time, the website now brings together all relevant public transport information for the Hanover region in one central location.
