Rhine-Ruhr Transport Association AöR

VRR sets the course for more user-friendliness.

The Rhein-Ruhr Transport Association (VRR) connects 16 major German cities and ensures the mobility of 7.8 million residents throughout the region. Therefore, it is one of the largest transport associations in Europe and therefore has a high responsibility to keep its passengers informed about optimal connections and possible disruptions as best as possible.

The project

For many years, we have been supporting the VRR in providing its passengers with suitable connections and all other relevant information on all end devices. We work according to the concept of a "Continuous Relaunch" with targeted further developments aimed at continuously optimizing the digital offerings of the association.

Destination Future

With the aim of reliably informing its customers in the future and providing the best possible user-friendliness through digital channels, the VRR entrusted us with the relaunch of its website.

Accessible and responsive design

After analyzing the previous user behavior and the usability of the system, as well as conducting a content audit, we developed a concept in an agile process and refined it with feedback from the VRR. This allowed change requests and optimization ideas to be quickly addressed and the result to be directly aligned with customer needs.

The result is a fresh design with a clear interface and intuitive access to the offers, services, and information of the VRR. The responsive layout ensures a positive user experience on PC, tablet, or smartphone.

Technical integration for precise information

The biggest technical challenge of the project was to integrate all relevant public transport information for real-time display of timetables and departures, as well as traffic disruptions and route changes. We integrated various public transport systems and linked them together. In addition, we integrated "DeinRadschloss" - a service that allows users to book secure bicycle parking spaces online. Furthermore, we implemented a complex search function that clusters its results into three relevant categories, providing a better overview. The implementation was based on the TYPO3 Content Management System.

New look and more intuitive operation

After the decision for a new corporate design by VRR, we completely redesigned the look & feel of the website in a rebrush in 2024. Not only was the adaptation of the new visual appearance in focus, but also the improvement of the user experience at crucial points.

TYPO3 and user guidance at a new level

In order to optimize user guidance at an early stage of the website visit, we have added a switch to the extensive ticket overview of the VRR, which directs "occasional travelers" and "frequent travelers" to the appropriate ticket with just a few clicks. By creating an interface to zuginfo.nrw, it is also ensured that passengers are always informed about current construction sites on the respective route they are looking for.

With the upgrade to TYPO3 version 12, we have brought the website up to date technically and facilitated the work of editors at VRR by making adjustments to code components and content elements. They now have more design options for building pages in the new design.

Project Manager VRR Website

That's what our customer says

With the relaunch of our website, we have taken a big step to make the information about public transport in the VRR even more easily and quickly accessible. Our goal was to tailor the site specifically to the needs of our users, with a clear structure and optimized display for mobile devices. The collaboration with the agency webit! was extremely constructive and solution-oriented. I highly appreciate the team as they have significantly contributed to the success of this important project with their dedication and expertise.
