Looking Back on Twelve Months of Ruby Community in Dresden

One year ago, we at webit! started organizing a regular Ruby meetup in Dresden. Our goal was to connect developers in the region and foster professional exchange. Under the name Dresden.rb, we revived the idea of a Dresden-based Ruby User Group and gave it new life. Aifinyo joined as a co-host and has actively supported the format ever since.

The first Dresden.rb meetup took place in November 2024. Since then, we’ve held five events, each with 15 to 20 participants. A steadily growing community now comes together regularly to hear talks, share experiences, and stay engaged with the Ruby stack.

Content, exchange, and an open community

Each meetup centers around talks and open discussions. Topics range from software architecture and containerization with Docker to AI and other current trends in the Ruby ecosystem. The atmosphere is open and collegial — everyone is welcome to contribute, present their own projects, or simply listen in.

Dresden.rb is growing – even beyond the local region

We’ve already welcomed guests from Hamburg and London to our local meetups. Every speaker receives a custom-designed Dresden.rb T-shirt and sticker as a thank-you — both created by the design team at webit!.

Sponsors like Ruby Central, fastly, and GitHub also support the format.

Dresden.rb recently became an official Ruby Passport venue. That means: if you attend our meetups, you can get a stamp in your passport — a great way to connect with the international Ruby community. The passports are handed out at Ruby conferences and meetups and allow participants to collect stamps as proof of attendance. They can also be linked to a personal account on rubyevents.org, where events are tracked automatically. With that, Dresden.rb becomes part of the global Ruby network — making local engagement visible far beyond the region.

How it works

Dresden.rb is organized alternately by webit! and aifinyo. Rooms, technology and catering are provided, including pizza, snacks, and drinks. Communication is done via our website and Discord. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience level.

Visibility and Impact

For us at webit!, Dresden.rb is more than just a community project. It’s also an opportunity to share our own topics, build new connections, and support speakers in preparing for their talks. At the same time, it creates visibility among an audience we connect with — both professionally and culturally.

What's next

Dresden.rb will continue to take place on a regular basis. New formats, additional speakers, and exciting topics are already in the works. Anyone interested — whether as a participant or with a talk of their own — can register anytime via the website or join us on Discord.
