As a BA student at webit! - A testimonial

  • July 11, 2018

Vojta is one of our six undergraduate students who are currently completing a three-year dual training program with us. After almost three years, he has successfully completed all training modules in our departments and is expected to receive his Bachelor's degree in Media Informatics in August 2018. He shares his experiences with us in the agency everyday life, which department he liked the most, and his funniest experience.

    Who is writing here?

I am Vojta, 22 years old, from the beautiful Bohemian city of Liberec in the Czech Republic, and after finishing high school, I decided to study media informatics in Germany. Due to its convenient location and the good reputation of the education, I chose to attend the Dresden University of Cooperative Education. When choosing the company for the practical phases, two things were particularly important to me: a professional working environment where I can try things out and a positive team atmosphere.

I searched for quite a long time and applied to several companies. I was interested in webit! because of the good training program for BA students that I had heard about, as well as the career prospects. Already during the job interview, I felt the relaxed and positive agency atmosphere, and fortunately my future boss Sven Haubold saw things just as positively as I did. Despite my limited experience in web development but with a passion for programming, I was hired and had three exciting and educational years as a BA student at webit! ahead of me.

An integral part of the team from day one

At the beginning of the training program, I was allowed to choose a test project that interested me. I chose a cooking recipes website that I could implement completely independently. I developed the website concept with navigation structure, created wireframes, and designed my own layout. Then, I created responsive HTML templates and also implemented the backend using the programming skills I had acquired up to that point. My team colleagues from all departments supported me in this process, and I became an integral part of the team.

About the training program at webit!

In each department, I was given various practice tasks that were specifically developed for the training of BA students at webit!. Through these tasks, I was able to acquire a lot of useful practical knowledge, which also helped me in my studies. The team leaders were my first point of contact and provided me with intensive support, while colleagues were always open to questions and suggestions of any kind. Initially, there was a comprehensive onboarding learning phase in each department. What was really great was that I always had enough time to familiarize myself with a new topic, as there was really a lot to learn.

I have not only learned several programming languages (Ruby, C#, Java, TypoScript, HTML, CSS, and Sass), but also templating languages like Fluid, Slim, and Razor. Additionally, I have extensively studied current content management technologies like TYPO3 and Sitecore. In the department Concept & Design, I learned professional wireframing and how to use various web design programs. I gained an overview of the big picture from the project managers, as they are the ones who accompany projects from the beginning, communicate with clients, and internally ensure that projects are completed as planned, "on time" and "on budget".

Last year it became really exciting. Because I was able to specialize in a specific field and demonstrate my acquired knowledge in real customer projects, such as for the Berlin gas supply company GASAG. Since I enjoyed working in the Sitecore team the most, I focused more on Sitecore in the last year of my training. I definitely see my professional future there.

    More further education at webit!

In addition to the fixed training program, at webit! there are other training opportunities that employees can take advantage of, which are also open to BA students. For example, there is the Scholar Day held once a quarter, featuring many presentations on various topics by colleagues for colleagues. In my last year of training, I also gave a presentation on Web Assembly and explained how this technology could be used for projects in the future. I have also attended User Groups and Hacktables to exchange ideas with like-minded colleagues on specific technologies and methods.

My résumé and tips for prospective BA students

Now that my graduation is approaching, I have to say in retrospect: it was a great time at webit!. I have really made progress professionally and also grown personally through teamwork. To other BA students who are currently looking for a practical partner, I would like to advise that you choose a company that you have a really good impression of. Because three years is quite long and switching in the middle of your studies is not always easy. If you are not sure if the practical company is the right fit, you can do an internship beforehand. And be aware that training is very time-consuming compared to a pure academic study. The vacation days are only a fraction of the semester breaks.

My funniest experience at the end

In May 2017, webit! celebrated its 20th anniversary and Sven Haubold, who is a big sailing fan himself, invited all of us on a sailing trip to Holland. I remember it very well. The departure was early on Friday at 7:30 am. The night before, we had a midweek party at the student club. I didn't want to miss it, even though I knew I had to get up early the next morning. I decided to go and planned to have just a couple of beers. However, things turned out differently. After definitely more than just two beers, I arrived home at around 4 am in the early morning light. I set my alarm for two hours later and knew it wouldn't be easy to get up on time. When my phone rang, I was woken up, still not quite sober, and looked at the clock: 7:45 am. Damn! Overslept! I answered a call from a colleague at webit!.

    "Yes?"
"Where are you?! We are all waiting for you!"
    "Uh, just woke up..."
    Silence...
    "When can you be there?"
"I need at least 45 minutes," I said slowly.
Then I heard noises in the background and the boss came to the phone:
"Vojta, where are you? We were just about to leave! We'll pick you up on the way. How long do you need to get to Neustadt train station?"
    "15 minutes."
"Well, my boy, then get going, quickly!"

I knew it would be very tight, but I managed to do it. Luckily, I had already packed. In record speed, I got dressed and ran through the city with my huge backpack on my back. In the end, I made it and we set off with everyone on board. To make up for the delay, I took over the onboard service on the way there, heated up Viennese sausages, and served cold drinks. The sailing trip on the IJsselmeer became an unforgettable experience for everyone.
